Diamonds are a rare and exquisite element in the jewelry industry, and we at James & Sons® Fine Jewelers adore them to no end. At our Chicagoland area jewelry stores, we are proud to offer a vast array of diamond options that is sure to spark your interest. But first, let’s take a look at what makes a diamond so unique.

The four C’s are what make up a diamond: cut, color, clarity, and carat. One of the most important is the cut, which is the element that optimizes light reflection to give it a certain level of brilliance. There are several types of shape cuts, ranging from round, princess, and emerald to oval, radiant, and trillion, along with depth cuts, including shallow, deep, and ideal.

A diamond is a very versatile rock, and with its fluidity comes a spectrum of colors. The most common, however, is a yellow or brown hue. A colorless diamond is extremely rare, and thus, incredibly valuable. Although more uncommon, diamonds are also available in pink, green, red, orange, and blue shades in addition to yellow and brown.

The clarity of a diamond is simple—the less flaws, the purer. Internal flaws include crystals, graining, needles, knots, chips, and cavities, while external flaws vary from polish lines and scratches to nicks. Any type of internal or external flaw can affect the value and beauty.

In diamond culture, the carat is the weight of the diamond. For reference, one carat is equal to 0.2 grams, or 1/142 of an ounce. Diamonds most often range from a ¼ carat to four carat. The smaller the carat, the more affordable it is, and vice versa.

While diamonds are most commonly found naturally, advanced technology and labs have allowed the diamond industry the capability to recreate the environment in which a diamond is able to grow. For example, laboratories can create a certain colored diamond that wouldn’t occur naturally.

There’s much to learn about diamonds, and we encourage you to contact one of our Chicago jewelers if you’d like any clarification. Our jewelry stores in Northwest Indiana and Chicago carry some of the most stunning diamonds on the market, and we’re happy to show them off!
