James and Sons Heads to Switzerland for BASELWORLD 2013!

If you’re shopping for a new watch or engagement ring in Chicago, jewelry news is probably constantly on your radar. So chances are that you’re already familiar with one of the most decisive industry events of the year: the annual BASELWORLD Watch and Jewelry Show, held in Switzerland every spring.

But for 2013, noteworthy buzz about this exciting occasion hits a little closer to home. Earlier this month, two representatives from your very own James and Sons spent an entire week in beautiful Switzerland, soaking up the latest masterful creations from the world’s most renowned watch, jewelry and precious stone brands! Jim Sunderland and John Sunderland of James and Sons were fortunate enough to attend this year’s BASELWORLD Watch and Jewelry Show, and we’re eager to share some of our experiences with you here on our blog.

Widely recognized for showcasing some of the most exclusive displays of the finest watch and jewelry collections in the world, BASELWORLD offers an exclusive peek into both current trends and what’s in store for the future of the industry. This year, the acclaimed convention drew nearly 1,500 exhibiting companies and more than 100,000 international professionals between April 25 and May 2.

Despite being directed at a niche demographic, BASELWORLD is consistently a big deal for the city of Basel, Switzerland. We were impressed to observe that watch companies buy out practically every ad space in the city (with the exception of H&M- apparently the Swiss love Beyoncé, too)! The convention center that hosts the fair has received a major transformation for 2013, with significant modernizations completed Herzog & de Meuron, the Basel-based architecture firm whose projects include the “birdnest” Olympic stadium in Beijing. The beautiful and dramatic building set a great stage for the fair, and inside was just as ridiculously impressive, featuring only one lane through the hall lined with massive trade show structures from the world’s top watch companies.

Of the many beautiful collections on display at BASELWORLD 2013, one of our favorites included unique and technologically innovative watches from Oris, a leading watch company that’s an old friend of ours here at James and Sons. As a small, privately held manufacturer, Oris has been producing purely mechanical Swiss-made watches since its inception in 1904.

This year, Oris displayed a handful of impressive limited-edition timepieces, including the Oris Royal Flying Doctor Service Limited Edition and the Oris Aquis Depth Gauge – the first-ever diver’s watch to measure depth by allowing water to enter the timepiece. Of course, our Oris experience was only enhanced by the boat party they hosted on the Rhine later that evening, during which Jim and John enjoyed a fair amount of Swiss lager with Oris owner and chairman Ulrich W. Herzog!

We were also very impressed by the Tissot exhibition, featuring everything from the delicate Pinky watch to the bold Tissot T10, which will be available later this summer. The Tissot display was a stunning standout, and one of the highlights of BASELWORLD 2013!
