The Rich History of James & Sons

You know that James & Sons, your Chicago jewelers, has been serving customers in the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana for years. But what you may not know is that James & Sons is a family business that started thanks to a twist of fate, and it has endured thanks to the tenacity and hard work of one family.

Jim Sunderland Sr. and his beloved wife Mary gave their family a promising start, raising four children in beautiful Homewood, Illinois. Jim Sr. worked hard for Steinberg-Baum Company Discount Store, a mass merchandiser that would remind modern consumers of the K-Mart or Target stores we know today. But when the owners of the Steinberg-Baum chain were found to have embezzled massive amounts of money, Jim Sr. found himself out of a job. Luckily for him, he had a valuable hobby – assessing, buying, and selling rare coins. Knowing he has no time to lose, Jim Sr. opened a shop in Calumet City to house his coin dealership, adding jewelry and diamonds to his business quickly to keep the profits up. Hoping to sound like an established and trustworthy jeweler, he gave his store the name “James & Sons.”

Although Jim Sr. chose the name purely to help his business sound reliable, it turns out to have been an accurate prediction of where the company was heading. These days, Jim Sr.’s sons Jim Jr. and John are running the business after his retirement. And a third generation has begun to be involved – some of Jim Sr.’s grandchildren have been spotted working at the stores. Maybe someday, a member of this third generation will take over the business. But we doubt they’ll change to name to “James & Sons & Grandsons” – the business Jim Sr. named to sound trustworthy and reliable has been proven over the last fifty years to be just that, and consumers know they can trust James & Sons for the finest jewelry, watches, and repairs in the Chicagoland area.
